Dear Windermere Friends,
Week 26 – Windermere Freedom Celebration, Saturday July 2
Windermere will celebrate our freedom this Saturday July 2 with fun games, good BBQ, a great musical guest– White Ribbon Day and of course fireworks.
There is something about patriotism and Baptists that goes back. We Baptist know how to celebrate. If you are familiar with Baptist history then you know the name John Leland. He was a Baptist pastor during the time of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. In fact he was key in the approval of the First Amendment and Bill of Rights!
But it is one incident in his life that lets me know this John Leland was a Baptist who knew how to celebrate.
John Leland was a pastor in Cheshire, Massachusetts when Thomas Jefferson become president of the United States in 1803. As a way to celebrate the victory of his friend, he led his Baptist church and the whole Cheshire Country to create a significant gift for Jefferson. He led in collecting milk and curds from 900 cows in the county. Then he led the county craftsmen to adapt a cedar press into a cheese press. The called it the Cheshire Mammoth Cheese. (Linguist say this is the first time the word mammoth was used as an adjective). The cheese bore the Jeffersonian motto “Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God”. The final product weighed 1234 pounds, was four feet wide, and fifteen inches thick. Leland himself delivered it to Washington in January of 1803. He ended up using a sleigh because the wagon was not big enough. The block of cheese lasted two years. Jefferson declared it tthe best cheese he had ever tasted.
John Leland was a Baptist Pastor who knew how to celebrate! We will not have a 1234 pound cheese block this Saturday but Windermere will have some fun celebrating!
