Dear Windermere Friends,
I received my bachelor’s degree in business administration. (I know it, a Baptist minister with a business degree, go figure) My professors recommended a lot of books by the leadership guru, Ken Blanchard. He is often quoted as saying, “feedback is the breakfast of champions.”
Windermere has basically two ways to receive feedback. One is through a survey (an e-mail using Survey Monkey). It has its limitations but we talk about this every week at staff meeting. The other way is from our trustees and ambassadors. Our ambassadors are the stakeholders. We gather Windermere ambassadors twice a year for fellowship and for intentional feedback.
Here are the ways we gather feedback from our ambassadors. This may help you in your church, work or family.
1. A breakfast time question and answer time
Like Blanchard says, “feedback in the breakfast of champions”, so why not gather at breakfast and answer questions. I am the master of the obvious. There is something about a relaxed time of sharing a meal that makes the sharing of feedback less threatening. Leaders must create a safe time for honesty. Authenticity makes feedback more real.
2. An information sharing time
Many times volunteers need a little nudge in order to give constructive feedback. By using an information sharing time, the leader can create a focused dialogue. I am very conscious of giving simple and digestible information so our ambassadors can understand the true picture. Part of every leader’s job is to establish clarity. You don’t need to have all the answers to have clarity. Many ambassadors were very appreciative of the information we were able to share. That means they understood it. Information sharing makes feedback more focused.
3. Brainstorming in small groups with large group reporting
Every ambassador has a different perspective that must be cultivated. I have seen brainstorming done well and I have seen it done poorly. This time I built our brainstorming time around three key questions
- Create a list of 5-10 things that need to be improved at Windermere?
- What are the 2 things that Windermere needs to STOP doing in the next 6 months?
- What are the things Windermere needs to START doing in the next 6 months?
It only takes a short time before a clear consensus is reached. Brainstorming makes feedback more actionable.
Allow me to quickly say that feedback can be gained from financial support as well. Our ambassadors as of today have given/pledged $19,400 for the repair of our multipurpose building. That number is growing, too. Ambassadors thank you for all your feedback! Windermere is better because of your service.
Please help us with a donation –
Go to windermereusa.logosconnect.com and set up a monthly donation of $10 a month for 12 months (or one year). With that small amount, Windermere can become more efficient and effective in the ministry of seeing lives changed on our campus.
It is always a pretty day at the lake!
