Week 43 – Words
I spend much of my time trying to use words to communicate carefully thought out ideas and plans. I guess it comes with the territory. This past week I have used words to talk with my staff and team, with the many Windermere donors and with our trustee board. With words comes the ability to build up or tear down. I am trying my best to use words in a wise manner. I heard the former pastor of North Phoenix Baptist Church, Dan Yeary, say this, “Words matter. We are a walking arsenal of destruction.”
Here are some quotes I have collected over the years, along with a few of my favorite proverbs –
“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. ” Mark Twain
“Men govern nothing with more difficulty than their tongues, and can moderate their desires more than their words.” Aristotle
“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” Lofton Hudson
“The only weapon that becomes sharper with use is the tongue.” D.L. Moody
“I have often regretted my speech but never my silence.” Plato
“There is no evidence that the tongue is connected to the brain.” Vance Havner
“I am convinced that the best service a retired general can perform is to turn in his tongue and to mothball his opinions.” General Omar Bradley (A son of Missouri)
“If I had kept my mouth shut, I wouldn’t be here.” Sign under a mounted fish
He who holds his tongue is wise. Proverbs 10:19b
Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18
He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. Proverbs 21:23
So what is a Christian to do? I think a wise Christian should find at least two ways to use their words for the glory of God: (1) Defend others – the Bible says in Matthew 12 we will be held accountable for the careless words we share. (2) Declare Christ – How long has it been since you have shared with someone how the Lord has saved your life? It is a challenge but we can better use our words to glorify the Lord.
